Nelson Mandela Bay delivered what was arguably the worst conditions yet for an Ironman event in this Bay. The swim was reduced to 1.9 Km for the Pros and 350 metres (more or less) for the Age Groupers, which is a good indication of how bad conditions were. Hats-off to everyone who ventured into the washing machine, headed out for a second bike lap in those hellish winds and then set off to do a marathon in conditions that flip-flopped between hot and cold, but always, always, windy!
As spectators were discouraged from attending, there were a lot less supporters on the route, but Gqeberha nevertheless delivered, as always. And once again many an Ironman would contribute their finish to the supporters on the run route.
A massive congratulations to all the ATC members who completed this event. It is one for the history books, which will, hopefully, never be repeated.
In his maiden full Ironman distance event, Bradley Weiss was 5th overall. Annah Watkinson came close to chasing the ladies’ winner down during the run but in the end finished with silver after a sterling performance.
Congratulations to Genelle Van Der Riet who won the 50-54 AG and Celia Pienaar who took Bronze in the 60-64 AG.
