Reported to be the worst weather experienced at this event, Ironman 70.3 Buffalo City, East London, 26 Jan 2020, certainly re-affirmed its reputation as one of the toughest 70.3 events. The swim offered a difficult return leg, into a headwind. The bike was tough throughout except for the “brief” return section on the highway when riders could gain some momentum from the tailwind and downward hills. But once riders got off the highway, it was a tough push back to the start. The run was very windy where it wasn’t very hilly and runners got sand-blasted on the section close to the beach.
Huge congratulations, therefore, to all the finishers at an event that probably saw one of the worst DNF rates ever.

Dean Hopf, second M30-34, Cristina Heywood, second F18-24 and Celia Pienaar, second F60-64.
