Cape Town 12 – WP DU Team – Winter Training

NEWS:

Social Saturday
Thanks very much to everyone who attended our social on Saturday after the canal swim.  It turned out to be a great party thanks to great organisation by Garth Dorman and the GPCC and ATC’s braai masters!  We intend to have many more of these.

ATC Container
We have purchased a 40 foot container and it arrived at GPCC yesterday!  Thank you very much to Mark Sochen, who kindly arranged for free delivery through transport company MSC Logistics.  Special thanks go to Rabea Solomons for all the arrangements and the MSC Logistics team who performed the tricky delivery on the embankment behind the screen.

We are eager to start using this for storing the club’s equipment and gear.  But first, the container will have to be re-painted and we are also planning to use the front section as the club’s office and gear shop.  We would therefore need to look installing electrical wires, lights and the required protection in the container.  If you have any contacts in the relevant industries, please let us know as we would prefer to source materials and skills through our membership base.

Helmets for Commuters
We have received a request from Head First for used cycling helmets, which they will donate to commuters who currently ride without helmets.  If you have an old helmet available, please bring it down to our canal swim or track session and we will get it to Head First.

RESULTS:

Cape Town 12 ONERUN
What an absolute pleasure to be part of an inaugural event that is set to become an iconic race for the benefit of our sport and City!  OK, so we’ll admit to being somewhat sceptical and less excited about a run through Paarden Eiland and the Harbour when our city has so many awesome routes to choose from.  But we were completely blown away by the awesome setting at the start, with Table Mountain perfectly positioned as the back-drop, the carnival atmosphere created by all the stations along the route, the fantastic loop through the City and the exciting down-hill finish!

General pre-race communication eluded to the fact that this was not going to be your average Sunday morning run.  When we received our invite to erect the club gazebo it was clear that slick organisation was going to be the order of the day.  Registration and late entry was a pleasure, transport logistics to the start was super-efficient.  From the mood of the runners during the event and positive feedback through social media afterwards it is clear that this sentiment is shared by most.  Ultimately, it is up to the participants to make a success of an event such as this and it is so much easier if runners can just get on an enjoy the event.

Congratulations to all the ATC’ers who took part and posted brilliant times!  Richard Murray was 15th overall in a time of 36:20!  Richard will be leaving SA soon to compete in the ITU World Triathlon London on 31 May.

WP Duathlon Team
Congratulations to the following ATC’ers, who were selected to represent Western Province at the SA Duathlon Championships, taking place in Bloemfontein from 4 to 5 July: Timothy Langerman (16-19), Chris Visser (20-24), Kobus Meyer (40-44), Alan Hardaker (40-44), Henry Wolstenholme (45-49), Derek Oehley (50-54), Elrika Calitz (25-29), Nienke Van Schaik (35-39), Maureen Dennehy (50-54) and Dawn Clarke (50-54).

UCI Amateur Road World Champs
Congratulations to Debbie Hibbert, who qualified to compete in the UCI Amateur Cycling Road and Time Trial World Championships, to be held in Denmark between 3 and 6 September.  The winner per age group will be the new UCI World Champion in the relevant age category and will receive the official World Champion jersey.  Debbie has decided to make a trip of it and will also do Ironman 70.3 Denmark, a week later.
