NEWS:
The Passing of Kosie Marais
We were shocked on the weekend to receive the terrible news of the unexpected passing of Kosie Marais, the owner of Breeland Cellar, where the Slanghoek Triathlon and other great sporting events are hosted. Kosie died in a car accident on Friday night. Kosie’s hospitality in the Slanghoek valley was legendary and we enjoyed spending time with him at the event each year. We have often stayed on the farm, during the race, or at other times: “Kosie was altyd byderhand om vir die stadsjapies die ligte te laat brand, of om die kraanwater aan die loop te kry. Rus in Vrede Kosie.”
Our sincerest condolences to the Marais family. Kosie will be sorely missed by the Slanghoek Valley and the greater Western Cape Triathlon community.

Level 4 Water Restrictions #RunningDry100
Level 4 Water Restrictions is set to be ratified by the City of Cape Town today. This means that nobody should be using more than 100 litres of water per day, which equals a 3 minute shower and about 3 toilet flushes. To create awareness of this restriction and the ongoing water crisis, Kelvin Trautman and Heleen Mills are doing a 24-hour, non-stop, 100 Kilometre run through the City of Cape Town and Atlantic Seaboard, carrying the life-sized #runndingdry100 hashtag.
They started this morning at 09:00 and will finish tomorrow (Friday) morning at 09:00. Please follow the #runningdry100 tag on Twitter to find out where they are and join in on their run at any time.
They will be at the Mouille Point Lighthouse tomorrow morning at 07:00 and you can join them there for a bit during the last 2 hours of their run.
ATC & Embark 5 Km TT
At last week’s monthly Club Time Trial it was probably the first time ever that we've had exactly the same times posted by the fastest runner at the Tuesday morning session and the fastest runner at the Wednesday evening session. Well done to
Matthew Knight and
Ryno Du Preez, who both ran 17:53. All the times can be views on our
Results Post.
SWIM: The canal swim will be on Saturday afternoons at 14:00.
BIKE: On Thursday morning, we will ride from the Point Virgin Active at 05:30.
RUN: Track will be at the Green Point Athletics Track, on Tuesday at 06:00 and on Wednesday at 18:00.
On Friday morning we will join the #RunningDry100 runners at the Mouille Point Lighthouse at 07:00 for a bit during the last 2 hours of their run.
Comrades
Good luck to everyone taking part in the Comrades Ultra Marathon on Sunday! As recommended by Jan Van Rooyen, during his informative talk at GPCC last week, it is important to get a lot of sleep this week (you probably won’t sleep much the night before the run), do some little runs and eat what you are used to (before and during the race).
The ATC gazebo will be on Tier 4, Site 120. Please see image below for a layout of the finish area. Note that this will not be our usual gazebo as we are renting one, but we will have some ATC branding up.
We will also be at the main entrance to the expo on Saturday at 12:00 if you would like to leave a small bag with us, to have waiting for you at the gazebo.
The list of ATC members doing the run is shown further down (Note that these are only the runners registered under ATC Running). ATC’ers running for other running clubs are not shown here since we don’t have the full entrants list. It goes without saying that all ATC’ers running for other clubs and their supporters are welcome at the gazebo too.
Safe travels to all the runners, good luck for the run and we will see you at the ATC Gazebo at the finish!
Unogwaja Challenge
Some runners are already 7 days into their travel down to Pietermaritzburg. When you read this,
Piet Viljoen and
Miguel Netto will be on day 7 of a 10 day bicycle “commute”, inspired by Phil Masterton-Smith (aka Unogwaja), who did this in 1933 because he could not afford the train ticket and wanted to race Comrades. They are raising funds for the
The Light Fund. For more details and to donate, please visit:

Clifton 1SOMS
Please note the Clifton 1SOMS open water swim, happening on Sunday, may be moved to the Camps Bay Tidal Pool due to bad weather expected. Please check the event’s Facebook page for updates.
