NEWS:
Southern Cape Fires
What happened in the Southern and Eastern Cape with the devastating fires ravaging through the area and towns is beyond belief. Described by Marsel Roos, who lives in Knysna, and Tryon Ingle, who collected donations from Edgemead and drove it through to Knysna on the weekend, as something we would only expect to see in a movie.
Whilst the effects of this on the Best 10 Days of Our Winter obviously pales into insignificance compared to what the people of Knysna are dealing with, we are happy to report that the Knysna Oyster Festival and most of the sporting events will go ahead as planned. We urge members not to make rash decisions about entries and accommodation already booked for this area. Knysna and surrounds will need the economic injection that the festival brings now more than ever, as they rebuild the town.
The Passing of Nezaam Isaacs
Our condolences to family and friends of Nezaam Isaacs, a member of the Itheko running club. Nezaam was killed in a hit-and-run accident last Tuesday, 6 June, in Belvedere Road, Rondebosch. We got to know Nezaam last year when he was training for the 2016 ITU Triathlon with close friend and running companion, Ashraf Orrie.
Ironman TriClub
Atlantic Triathlon Club is currently leading Division II in the overall TriClub standings Worldwide! We are also leading the special competition, started this year, for the most number of first-time participants at an Ironman event. We would like to thank all the members who signed up with Ironman TriClub under ATC. If you have not signed up for the TriClub yet, please visit the link below and select Atlantic Triathlon Club under your Athlete Profile.
We will publish an updated list of point earners after Ironman 70.3 Durban. If you are not sure if you are registered, please reply to this email to enquire.
Member Personal News
Congratulations to Kevin Flanagan and Geri Wessels, who got engaged on the weekend.
RESULTS: Details here...
Comrades 2017
This was New Balance’s third Comrades as technical sponsor. As part of the build-up to the event, New Balance created the #myfutureself campaign, which looked at what’s instore on race day, sacrifices made by Comrades entrants, their values, convictions and experience. New Balance invited runners to write a letter to their future self and tell that person who they want to be and how to prepare for the final 87 Km lap. Caitlin Wolstenholme (9:38) was one of the runners selected to be an ambassador for the campaign. We are not sure what Caitlin wrote to herself in that letter but we can tell you that she improved her Comrades time by over an hour from her last up run!
Congratulations to all the ATC’ers who finished the Ultimate Human Race! All the ATC Running members’ results are further down in this email. If you ran for another club and is also a member of ATC, please let us know and we will add your result to the on-line results page. Special congratulations to Bill Rowan medal earners: Brett Nattrass (08:21), Marié Wessels (08:35), Dominic Boyle (08:45), Nic De Beer (KPMG, 08:48) and Oliver Davies (08:55).
Ashleigh Hansen (09:02) was already in the finish venue when the Bill Rowan cut-off gun went off and narrowly missed this medal.
Miguel Netto (09:08:41) became the first athlete to do the Unogwaja Challenge for three years in a row. This being Miguel’s 3rd Comrades, he has never travelled to Comrades by any means other than his bicycle. Piet Viljoen also did the Unogwaja Challenge this year and completed the run in a very respectable 10:23.
You can read more about Miguel’s hat trick in the latest Modern Athlete Magazine.

At the SA Masters National Track & Fields Championships, held at the Green Point Athletics Track in May, Esri Loock-Bezuidenhout got a Silver in the 800 metres, whilst husband Roger Bezuidenhout got a bronze.
